between what we like to do & what we must do; between religion as a hobby & religion as the serious business of obedience to Allah. To detect the difference & make the right choice requires balance, sensitivity & wisdom.

Islam still upholds the righteous prohibition of Riba (usury). Although not in practice in any of the Muslim countries at governmental level, there is immense enthusiasm for a Riba-Free financial system amongst Muslims. Western economists too have discussed the issue at length and many of them are also of the view that the religious prohibition should be brought back.

Islam forcefully asserts the traditional family as the fundamental social unit. Along with the husband-wife relationship, the Parent-child relationship is most critical. The relationships are reciprocal. The duties of one are the rights of the other.

Not every business idea or possible business enterprise is good for the society. And the decision regarding right and wrong here cannot be left to the so-called market forces. Right and wrong in the economic life, as in all life, must be determined by a higher source.
